SIX STEPS OF SPA CARE & MAINTENANCE:
- Circulation Your spa water turns over once roughly every thirty minutes, so it is necessary to run your circulation system for roughly thirty minutes a day. In order to avoid unwanted contaminants, it is best to do so with the cover off for maximum ventilation.
- Filtration Having the proper filtration set up for your spa is a factor that greatly impacts the quality of your water. Without adequate filtering, little contaminants are never even collected and left to freely float around the water in your spa. This is often why, even with nice and steady chemical levels, the water can look cloudy.
- Cleaning Body oils, lotions, dust, and many other impurities can actually stick to your waterline and cause an unsightly ring, which doesn't help you as the spa owner one bit! With regular cleaning, you can avoid this altogether. There are even little "helpers", such as the Scumball™, that can be hidden in your filter area to help with this.
- Draining and Refilling Every so often, you will need to drain and refill your hot tub. Over time, the spa water will collect and dissolve substances. These dissolved solids just build up over time. We can perform a Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) test at our store in Olathe if you're ever suspicious that your levels are too high. However, if you drain and refill every three or four months you should be fairly safe from your TDS ever becoming a problem.
- Chemistry The majority of spa owners choose to go with a traditional chlorine or bromine sanitizing system. These are fairly simple to regulate. This is the most important factor of your water chemistry. Other than that, keeping your pH at a healthy level (usually between 7.4-7.6) will keep your water feeling comfortable and looking great. Simple test strips will suffice when you are needing to test these levels, and more. It becomes an effortless part of your weekly routine, once you get the hang of it. We always test water at Swimfun, so don't be afraid to come and bring us a water sample!
- Testing It is crucial to test your spa water regularly. There are a few factors to keep an eye on. These include your sanitizer, pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Metals and TDS are less frequently something that need to be adjusted, but you should still be aware of their existence in your spa. Again, if this sounds even remotely overwhelming, we have all sorts of resources that will be of great help here at Swimfun.
